The Great Flaring The Return Of The Burned
Back To IndexIn the time after the Great Conquest, a new threat arose to the humans of the Empire of Remia. Known as the Burned, they were said to have been transformed into savages by the magic of a dragon burning their skin in an event called The Day of Justice. Driven from human lands, they retreated to the infertile north, where they progressed into a barbarian society. As the centuries passed, they grew stronger, and in 132-BT, they began raiding the new Remian settlements that had sprung up around their homelands.
In just a few short years, the Burned had grown in power and were no longer content with mere raids. In 138-BT, they began conquering and settling the lands they had once been banished from, enslaving any humans they found. The Empire was weakened, distracted by the First Human-Elven War, and torn apart by internal divisions between the northern duchies and kingdoms of the Skjalvan culture and the Remian culture of the south.
As the Burned invasion raged on, the northern realms banded together against the Empire, seeking to fight off the barbarian hordes instead of engaging in the war with the elves in the south. Remian forces tried to bring the northern realms back into the fold, but they rebelled and declared their independence. The kingdoms of Skjalva, Helvegrim, Hallnir, and Fjollvond fought against both Remia and the Burned, and their efforts to take back the north quickly eroded away the Empire's strength in the south.
The end of the conflict was marked by Skjalva and the other northern realms gaining their independence. The Duchy of Fjollvond formed an alliance with the largest tribe of Burned, and the Duke even married a Burned chief's daughter, cementing the bond between the two peoples. Smaller battles and skirmishes between the alliance and Remia continued for over a hundred years, until the outbreak of the Second Human-Elven War.
